Exotic Pet Care

Best friends come in all shapes and sizes, and some have feathers, scales, shells, or tiny paws. At James Island Veterinary Hospital, we’re proud to provide compassionate, knowledgeable veterinary care for exotic pets in James Island, Charleston, and surrounding communities.

Exotic pets often have very specific needs when it comes to nutrition, habitat, temperature, humidity, handling, and preventive care. They can also be very skilled at hiding signs of illness, which means small changes in appetite, behavior, droppings, weight, or activity level should never be ignored.

Veterinary Care for Unique Companions

Our team can help care for a variety of exotic pets, including:

  • Rabbits
  • Guinea pigs
  • Ferrets
  • Hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice
  • Reptiles, including lizards, turtles, and snakes
  • Birds
  • Chicken
  • Other small mammals and exotic companion pets

If you share your home with a pet who is not a dog or cat, please call us before scheduling so we can confirm that we can appropriately meet your pet’s needs.

Exotic Pet Wellness Exams

Routine exams are one of the best ways to protect your exotic pet’s health. During a wellness visit, our veterinary team may evaluate your pet’s body condition, skin, coat, feathers, scales, teeth or beak, eyes, mobility, and overall behavior. We can also discuss diet, enclosure setup, enrichment, and other husbandry factors that play a major role in exotic pet health.

Preventive care is especially important because many exotic species do not show obvious signs of illness until a condition has become more advanced. The AVMA recommends choosing a veterinarian with experience in your pet’s specific species, and exotic pet organizations emphasize that rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, reptiles, birds, and other nontraditional pets benefit from species-appropriate veterinary care.

Sick Visits and Medical Care

Please contact us if your exotic pet is showing signs such as:

  • Not eating or drinking normally
  • Weight loss
  • Changes in stool, urine, or droppings
  • Lethargy or hiding
  • Labored breathing
  • Overgrown teeth, nails, or beak concerns
  • Swelling, wounds, or abnormal lumps
  • Changes in movement or posture

Because exotic pets can decline quickly, prompt care is important.
